4th February 2010

We’ve had two lovely warm days of clear blue skies but this morning we woke up to rain.

From Robe, the highway once again turns inland where for miles and miles we pass more scrubland and not much else apart from a giant lobster on the side of the road at Kingston SE and a couple of inquisitive kangaroos.

The giant lobster!

With a great distance to cover today, we pretty much drove straight to Adelaide. Our first stop around lunchtime was at Haandorf, a mere 25 kms from Adelaide.

Haandorf is the most touristy destination in the Adelaide Hills and gets crowded at weekends. Founded in 1839, it’s Australia’s oldest German settlement and still has the look of a nineteenth-century village. We enjoyed a picnic lunch in the park followed by an oversized piece of cake at the German Cake Shop. We all felt really stuffed and a little bit sick afterwards!

Our next stop was Mount Lofty, again in the Adelaide Hills. A sumit surounded by dry South Australian bushland. On a clear day there are fabulous views right across the sprawling mass of Adelaide, however, today’s weather although drier by now meant everything was very hazy.

By now it was early afternoon so we headed into Adelaide and checked into the Picadilly Apartments in a shaded, leafy street in North Adelaide which was to be our base for a few days. Since we still had the car we took a trip to the Interstate Railway station for Andy to collect his tickets for the Overlander train back to Melbourne and us to collect our tickets for the Ghan to Alice Springs.
