23rd November 2009

This morning we picked up our campervan which is to be our home for the next two and a half weeks.

To be brutally honest, we weren’t exactly enamoured of our little van when we first saw her, she was much smaller than we had envisaged and while she did have the advertised shower and toilet, the toilet is little more than a portaloo. I don’t really know what we expected, but this is it for the next little while. Also Ed can’t actually stand up straight in it which means I’ll be doing the cooking for the next couple of weeks, so from his point of view there is a bright side :).

Well, it isn’t perfect, but it’s what we are stuck with, so we hit the road, heading over Arthur’s Pass for our first night in Jacksons. The further we got from Christchurch the cloudier the weather became, although we did manage to get some stunning views of the Southern Alps before the weather finally closed in and it started to rain. When we arrived at the campsite, it was well and truly raining so we opted for one of their covered sites - cheating a bit I know, but at least it gave us a chance to explore the van and find out where things like fresh water went.

Althought the campsite did have a shared kitchen facility, that really felt like cheating and not really camping, also we wanted to use facilities in the van as much as possible, so we cooked at home that night before settling down for the night.
