Another grey start, so this morning we decided to head off further north and explore the Far North Coromandel. We got back in the car and headed out on the extremely windy and undulating coast road, the car was in 2nd and 3rd the whole way round. The scenic viewpoint at the top afforded us some excellent views of the bays on both sides of the peninsula.

Next, we passed through quaint Coromandel Town. The far north is quite isolated and there are only a few roads, a lot of which are unsealed, especially very far north. About half an hour north of Coromandel, we lost the tarmac and the rest of our journey back down the coast was spent on dusty unsealed roads. It is a spectacular area though, with little beaches and coves with very few people about. Unfortunately, during the day the weather went from bad to worse and by the time we returned to the hostel it was raining, but not before we’d had chance to explore this beautiful and rugged region and spent a few hours on it’s snake-like roads.
