9th November 2009

Originally we were planning to walk the Tongariro Pass today, reputedly one of the best one day hikes in New Zealand, however, the weather was against us, with low cloud and rain showers. So we needed an alternative for the day.

This morning, we took a short walk along the Tongariro river in Turangi, a town which is the self proclaimed trout fishing capital of the world. There were a few fishermen out searching for the trout, which are plentiful in this lovely river.

Then, this afternoon, today’s main event, we headed off on an exciting trip down the Tongariro river. The afternoon started with us layering up in various fleeces and wetsuits, complete with boots and life vests and helmets in preparation for our trip down river. We received a briefing from our guide Rod on moving the boat and the instructions he would use, then off we set.

Claire all kitted up and ready to go!

Us all set to hit the rapids

Rafting down the Tongariro River

Rafting down the Tongariro River The river was crystal clear, so clean and fresh and about 10 degrees, so we were able to see plenty of trout as we swept downstream. The rapids were awesome with water splashing everywhere, although we never really felt cold. We managed to navigate the whole river without anyone falling out, although we did jump off a cliff into a deep pool, so we were all wet anyway!

After the rafting!

After successfully negotiating the river it was back to base for a welcome hot shower and hot dog and beer. An excellent trip which has certainly given us a taste for white water rafting :).
