Watching the weather last night we were warned that the west coast was in for a soaking as a result of the tail end of tropical typhoon Melor which hit Japan a few weeks ago. We hadn’t quite appreciated how much rain and wind this meant we would get.

When we opened the door this morning, this is what we saw!!

The rain from our hotel room :(

The vertical, driving rain and blustery winds gusting up to 60 mph reduced visibility to a minimum. The first part of highway 1 down the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles, near Half Moon Bay had been closed due to a fatal accident, so we had to resort to the freeway, not altogether a bad thing!

So, today has really been a case of getting to where we were going. This area of coastline is famous for its marine mamals, but I doubt we would have seen anything even if we were brave enough to get out of the car! We tried to go to the cinema this afternoon, but powercuts throughout the area had even affected that :(. So instead a day holed up catching up on emails and reading and looking at other things to do on the rest of our trip.
